You have the same goal now that I had last spring. I am as eager as you are to see the responses of runners who have been successful in maintaining or improving their base between marathon seasons.
In my attempt, I ran for three months at 50 mpw during the late spring and early summer. I was able to improve my 10k speed but the effort eventually led to various foot ailments.
You might want to consider a lot of cross training. Give your body a chance to recover from Chicago. Perhaps make one long run per month and do speed work one day per week during the next few months. Do other activities also, such as weights, bike, swimming, stair climbers, etc.
After a relatively low-stress winter, resume your marathon training in early 2002.
Listen to the advice of others here. But do allow your body some time to heal between your marathon seasons.
