I'll be running my first marathon (Silicon Valley) on 10/28 and have two questions kicking around in my head:
1. Pace. My race performances are all over the place. A couple of years ago I ran a 5 miler in 32:30 (@ about 6:30), then I screwed up my knee, came back, and now seem a bit slower: 5k in 21:34 (& about 6:42). Knowing my personality, I think I should run using a goal heart rate. Otherwise, I'll do something stupid like try to qualify for Boston on my first time out (3:10 for me). I'm 31 and having a resting rate of about 65 and max of 200. Various net calculators tell me I should run at about 174 bpm during the race. I did 20 miles on Sunday at about 170 without incident. Any comments on the advisability of this approach v. running for a specific time (which I would guess would be, say, 3:18ish for me)?
2. Drinking. I've got a Camelback Flash Pro fanny pack which treats me a-ok for training runs. I'm thinking of using it for the race as I'm not too effective at drinking from those cups. Stupid, not stupid? Any advice for how many oz of sports drink to put down per hour (I'm about 138 lbs if that matters). Do you drink at every stop? How much?
