1. Drinking. Perhaps the best advice every posted on this site about hydration and other preparation and logistics was from Richard, 4/13/01, in a post entitled "Yes, if you run the first part slower than the second half." You should read Richard's post. For other advice, Gatorade (www.gatorade.com) recommends 28-40 oz/hour of their product during hard exercise. I recently read an article about Mia Hamm (soccer star) that said she was measured at losing 16 oz/hour. The answer for you is probably to replace 16-40 oz/hour during a marathon. Personally, I stop at every water station and drink about 2/3 of a Dixie cup of their sports drink, plus on hot days I pour one cup of water on my head.
2. Shoes. I agree that you need new shoes for a marathon. Put 50 to 100 miles of use on them prior to your marathon, to be sure you know how the shoes work (ie, do you need band-aids in a certain spot?, are some socks too thin or too thick?).
