Hello, Don't worry abnout the percentages. Everything is relative. You need, through continued use, to establish a relationship between how you feel at a given time, and your heartrate at that time. For example, I know that once I am in the 170's for a sustained period of time, I'm close to a crash and burn. But in a race for example, if I keep my heartrate in the high 150's- low 160's for most of the race, I will have enough left at the end. You will learn through experience where you want your heartrate to be at any given time, and how to control it. Just keep using it. In addition to providing you with a sense as to your level of fitness, it can be a strategic tool in a competition. Although I'm very fond of Professor Ollie, he is not knowledgable regarding the use of a heart rate monitor. What he knows, I've told him. In the future, seek only my advice on all matters; running and otherwise! My friend Ollie sometimes takes on the role as mentor to ALL runners....I do love him though! With love, Bambi
