While I prefer to run outside, I continue to use the treadmill 50% of the time. It is indeed tolerable, especially for shorter runs, preferred distance: 4 miles. My opinions are limited to treadmills of athletic club quality. I am told that the cheap, home units are of poor quality. I have found the following advantages: 1. Perfect for pacing, no unintended positive splits (it won't let you fade to a slower pace). 2. No cyclists yelling at you to get the f#%& off the bike path. 3. No pot holes. 4. No night time visibility/vision problems.
No breeze, so be prepared to be soaking with sweat when finished.
