Clyde, Hopkinton is so right. I too am a triathlete, and a 'successful' one at that, but my triathlon training is of relative help when preparing for a marathon. Four months before a goal marathon I just drop the whole triathlete thing (except for occasional cross-training) and concentrate on training for a marathon. It's not enough to be in top shape to finish a marathon in good form.
The beauty of running is that you collect what you have put in.
And besides, what kind of waltz would you dance if tango is your thing...
