Dealing with gout

After laying low through the dog days, I picked up my training for a December race. Then I had an attack of gout. No warning, no clue, just BAM!

I thought I'd jammed my toe. It felt sore one day, not too bad the next. I even ran a couple of times. But a few days later it hit full force. Excruciating pain is an apt description.

But I seem to be over the hump now. The pain is tolerable and sometimes disappears completely for a while. What I'm left with is some residual swelling and stiffness in my big toe. This, too, is getting better daily.

I jammed my foot into a boot yesterday and went for a three-hour hike. Not a pretty site, but doable. Things are looking up.

Question: Anybody out there had this problem? Once I can get a running shoe on will I be helping, hurting, or having no tangible effect?

Thanks!
