Not sure if this would be recommended for everyone, but it worked for me.
I came down with a bit of peroneal tendonitis 3 weeks before a marathon. I ran it pretty much pain free by putting two heel cups in my shoes. At first I tried putting one heel cup in, but it didn't help, but two heel cups (one on top of the other) did make the pain go away. I also put two in the other shoe, because it felt weird walking with one heel higher off the ground. Make sure you get a couple of runs in before with the heel cups, because they change things up a little bit. good luck
