Katherine, I bought my first bike about 7 weeks ago to use as a cross-trianing activity for my marathons. (I also have friends who are triatheletes and I've entertained the idea, too!) I went to a specialty bike shop and they were great in helping me to select the right bike. I also bought a book that helped me to learn about my bike and the sport. But the best help I've received so far is when I started riding with a cycling club. Everybody has been great in helping me to learn things that come from their personal experiences (like keep your heals down and your legs extended to just a slight knee bend when climbing hills so you utilize the gluteal muscles and maximize leg strength, how and when to shift effectively, etc.) They enjoy bringing new people into the sport, and helping them to learn, especially girls because there aren't many of us who ride when compared to the number of guys. You're welcome to stay in touch if you like so we can keep track of each others progress. Buzzy-
