Just want to thank everyone.
I am signed up for the Army 10 miler, will run it at marathon pace, and will use it as a chance to test out my discipline of staying on pace in MCM 2001 while 8,000 (est.) people are running faster than me.
While I can see my running program's logic of trying to keep 1st timers out of this race (fearing they will go crazy and injure themselves) I think it is a bit worse to have newbies run a marathon when their longest previous RACE is a 5k or 10k. I think you need to practice in a race where you are tempted to really take off, but have to control yourself to ensure you don't use up to much nrg in the 1st few miles.
I am glad that you all agree.
