Of course Steve is right but I have yet to meet a marathoner who has enough control over his/her competitive drive to marathon-pace a 10 miler... I don't know, but before the short race (it was a 10 k) two weeks before my last marathon, I decided to "race" with a friend whose pb was close to my marathon pace, and keep her company, because otherwise I would never have been able to hold back...
