Hi Tom,

You defend the concept of raising money for a charity very well. But you have not defended the practice of using money raised for charity to cover personal expenses, which is the actual issue here. When I run a race, I pay for my own plane ticket, entry fee, and hotel. On occasion, I've merged a run with a vacation. This is for *me*, and so I pay for it with *my own money*, not money that my friends, family, and coworkers have donated to fight leukemia. If I decided to raise money for a cause, I would not use that money to pay for my own personal expenses. I'm glad to hear that most charity groups that do engage in this practice are upfront about it, though I think this simply means that they are open about engaging in distasteful behavior.

I don't understand why some people do this. Why not show respect for the generosity of your donors by funding your own trip? Why divert money raised to fight disease to pay for your own vacation?

Anyway, it sounds like many (and I hope most) charity runners don't use charity donations for personal expenses, so I suppose that people like me who find this practice distasteful just need to do a bit of research to be sure that we are funding charity groups that share our point of view.
