Just some thoughts. Bear in mind, the writer is an opinioned, competitive, type-A male, with all the associated baggage.

Someone essentially said it already, but most runners are simply window dressing at marathons, not relevant to the actual competition at hand. No one but you or I really care whether we make our Boston Marathon qualifying times.

As far as why the masses are running, ie. charity, personal accomplishment, who cares, as long as it makes you feel good.

As for people cutting corners to get a finishers medal, I really don't see how that devalues your medal if you actually finished. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for punishing cheaters, they're pretty much worthless. But it's the medal on the cheater's mantle that is valueless, not yours. Quite frankly, I wish they would just do away with finishers' medals, it's like third grade where they would give everyone a blue ribbon.

Cutoff times, I don't know, but I'll tell you, there was nothing better than watching a 70-something year old guy named Bill Bell complete the Hawaii Ironman just under the 17:00-hour cutoff when he had missed it by about two minutes the year before. Without the failure the year before, trust me, the success the next year would never have been as sweet.

A marathoner is someone who is willing to fail for the opportunity to succeed. Those of you just out there for charity and nothing more, or just to finish seem afraid to fail, and for that reason, will never know the true success what comes with true marathoning.
