"Wouldn't that be something if Marathons decided to go elite also and exclude anyone over say 3:20. All us wannabees with the elitest attitudes would have to put on our own events."

Well actually that IS how it is, up to a point. The elite runners get special starts and special perks, and the rest of us--the newbies and the one-offs and the slowpokes--pay their way. We non-elites may be wearing bibs but we're basically there just to provide crowd support and and give a convenient pretext for closing down city roads. This is true of the 3-hour finishers as much as the 6-hour finishers: collectively we're the cash cow that makes the event possible. And if we get the idea that a race is disorganized, or deceitful, or just a junk event...well, we'll set our sights elsewhere. This is the economic reality that the MCM has had to face up to. One more black eye and it would be out of business.
