As mentioned already, nice point, Tom. I have been involved in the TNT program for 5 seasons and have nothing but absolute PRAISE for my local team of VERY dedicated staff, coaches and participants. Yes, there is a WIDE RANGE of abilities within the TNT program - those beginning their journey of training for their FIRST marathon (remember what a great experience that was?) to those who have finished DOZENS of races. TNT offers a great opportunity for those who only plan on completing (YES and FINISHING FAIRLY) ONE marathon and also offers a great springboard to increase interest in the sport and create lifetime runners. My experience in our local group is that OVER HALF of participants continue running and complete MULTIPLE marathons and half-marathons in the years following their first TNT event. Personally, I credit the incredible TNT coaching staff over the past 4 years for helping me lower my marathon time from 3:58 to 3:09. Everyone has different reasons for choosing to train for and run a marathon (charity runners and non-charity runners alike), and for some folks in both categories, their first marathon MAY BE their last. However, as long as everyone is playing by the rules and running the same (full) distance, what difference does it make? Isn't a race really a celebration of your training and dedication to your own personal goal (whatever that may be?). Part of my joy of running each marathon is watching runners of ALL abilities reach their personal goal during the race and when finishing! I think some of folks with hateful posts above have simply forgotten the joy of race day and sharing the experience with runners who have worked just as hard as YOU have when lining up at the start.
