not Rosie Ruiz, just a slippery slope

Zeke and others have compared the Dr Jean case to Rosie Ruiz. Rosie, as you may recall, was the person who took the subway to finish the New York Marathon (1980, I think), and didn't get caught; then used her NYM time to qualify for the Boston, where she was a more unusual item, and where they did catch her. Rosie may have had mental instability (who doesn't?) but her deceit was careful and premeditated. The JeansMarines scandal on the other hand looks to be more of a slippery-slope of rationalizations. The founder was able to justify cheating because a) they were missing the timing mats and thereby really doing a sort of 'fun run'; and b) this sort of thing had been going on for years, particularly in races that are not carefully scrutinized.
