A Positive Thing (in the long run)

I have to agree with a number of comments about charity runners both positive and negative. I mostly side with the comments posted by RLY.

I was a non-runner until I became involved with Team in Training. I have now completed 7 marathons of which I am very proud, but I am more proud of the nearly $30,000 I have raised for research. Without TNT, that money wouldn't be there, and I would not be a runner. I now consider myself a runner with an average finish around 5:15 or so. Does being involved with TNT and running at that pace make me more or less of a runner than the others that post negative comments? Find out some facts before you make statements that are 1/2 truths please.

I have been involve with TNT for nearly 9 years as a runner and volunteer. I have never heard them suggest to the new runners that they can finish with assistance. Either in time, or by special transportation. When information sessions are held for Chicago for example, they tell the people that there is a 6 hour time limit. If you can't do it in 6 hours, don't sign up. There are walker friendly marathons out there. But again, never any word about short cuts or assistance.

Charity running has brought many people to the sport. So what if they never go back to running after they accomplish their goal. However, marathons are 26.2 miles, and every step should be covered. I don't care about the time, but you aren't a marathoner until you have covered every inch of that course. I agree that times shouldn't be shown, or medals given, but don't broad brush everyone that wears a purple singlet or has a name of a charity on their shirt.
