Marathons are for running

Having completed a charity bike ride in the past, I sympathize and encourage raising money for a great cause. However, it seems that these charity groups are losing sight of what a marathon is -- running 26.2 miles. Admirable cause notwithstanding, there is no reason to think you should get a free pass b/c you have raised money for a charity. You must still comply with the rules. Perhaps there needs to be some creative brainstorming about how to meet the demands of the many wonderful people who want to complete marathons for charity, but might not be able to finish in the times allotted by normal marathons. The bike ride I completed, for example, was only comprised of charity riders -- so finish times didn't matter and everybody participating was there for a cause. With the charity groups at marathons expanding, perhaps organizations like Team in Training need to do their own race with only charity runners/walkers and have a longer time cutoff (or no cutoff at all). Otherwise, the atmosphere of marathons will continue to evolve (devolve, some would say) from serious athletic pursuits to a migrating Sunday morning party.
