It doesn't matter whether it's for charity or not. No one should be driven to within a short distance of the finish and allowed to be counted as an official finisher. That's ridiculous! Why not just bus them the entire way? I can't imagine anyone getting any satisfaction out of wearing a finisher's medal for a race they didn't really finish. Many marathons have a cut off time, but race directors are gracious enough to allow runners to finish 20 - 30 minutes or more after that time, especially if they've had a bad day. But these are folks who make it to the finish after running (or walking) the entire length of the course. I'm hoping these incidents of short cutting won't end that courtesy. Who knows when any of us will have a bad day and miss the 6 hour cut off by a few minutes. At least we would have covered the entire distance.
