I've run on many country back roads with their share of untethered dogs. Most dogs simply stop chasing you when you stop and face them, but they may continue to bark like mad and make you a bit uneasy.
I don't know if this is exactly sound advice, but I turn around and run directly AT any dog that chases me. It thoroughly confuses them. They turn tail and beat it back up the driveway like they've seen a ghost. (Warning: This technique is not suitable for all breeds.) After doing this once, they won't mess with you the next time either.
