I'm for doing away with the metals. When a marathon gives out a mug instead of a metal at the finish line, this is something I put in my display case. The large races should stay open past 6 hours until every participant is finished. With all the money that is taken in in large races(Chicago: 31,000 x $60.00 = $1,860,000.00) the race should remain open or else refund the money of the people still on the course when they close down. Why people would pay the high entrance fee and then walk most of the race course is baffling to me. Fees for these races seem too high but people seem to be willing and eager to pay them judging by the high number of participants.
