Heya all! I just found this site a few weeks ago and I think its great! Anyway, I have made the decision to start training for my first marathon, and have read a few running books by people like Bill Squires, James Fixx, and Hal Higdon in order to tweak my training and improve my running. Although running is definately lowering my percentage of body fat, I am really worried about the potential to lose muscle (mostly upper body) that seems to be a common phenomenon among marathoners (I believe it was Mr. Higdon that said he was not in shape until people started worrying about his emasculated appearance). My nutritional intake is about 60/30/20 carbs/protein/fat, and I lift weights 3 times a week on my light running days (I run 5 times a week). My questions are: 1> has anyone here had success keeping and possibly gaining upper body muscle while running, and 2> what portion of my (immediate) after running meals should contain protein?

Thanks,

HotPickle
