hunks and toothpicks - take 2

This question has come up before and if you poke around this site some you'll find some good feedback, but it all comes down to whether you're a hunk or a toothpick kinda guy. I'm sorta hunkish.

I just turned 50 and my goal is to be "fit enough." Fit enough for what? Fit enough to go skiing, cycling, or backpacking without worrying about killing myself. Fit enough to enjoy a pickup volleyball game at the family picnic. And, yes, fit enough to run a marathon.

I run five days and lift two. On a purely egotistical level, I lift because I like the way my body looks. On another level, running is a very imbalanced activity. Lifting helps maintain a certain level of muscular balance. And I find my legs are fresher the day after lifting.

As for how much to eat, I eat less protein than you. Yet, while I'm not trying to bulk up, I've seen a gradual, but steady increase in what I can lift. So I'm definitely not losing anything by eating less protein.

Again, it all comes back to what you want - run fast, bulk up, or somewhere in between.
