Well, I am someone who typically puts in 10-12 kyds a week in the pool
I found out that I ran my fastest half marathon when I was doing run/swim/run combo's (run to the pool, swim 2-3 kyds, run back and then tack on extra milage).
Swimming loosens the shins and aids ankle flexibility.
If you can't swim very well but would like to learn, I'd suggest the book "Fitness Swimming" by Hines. Of course, that is no substitute for having the immediate feedback that a coach can give.
Yeah, I'd rather run if given a choice, but I do love my swim workouts. And, though I have nothing to back this up with, swimming seems to provide a massaging effect to achey legs.
