Altering a training program -- ??

I'm currently training for my first marathon. Over the last couple months, I've built a base of about 18 miles a week and have done several long runs in the range of 6 to 7 miles. I'm now in the third week of a 16-week training program for beginners. I am feeling pretty good so far and would like to do some longer runs and work on a slightly higher base than what the program recommends. Would I risk injury or other problems by doing so? If it is safe, does anyone have suggestions on how I could go about determining what is a safe increase? Thanks!
