Reading some of the threads has prompted me to pose these questions to the community: How much emphasis do you put on upper body strength work when trainig for a marathon? How much emphasis do you put on core strength work when trainig for a marathon? How much impact do you think each of these have?
Since I asked the question, let me be the first to offer an opinion. I used to do three days per week of upper body work when getting ready for a marathon and five days per week of sit-ups. I did not feel that the upper body stuff helped that much. In fact, I felt I was just carrying more weight. Now, I'm doing no upper body weights, but I am really working hard six days per week on core (abdomen, low back, gluts, hip flexors)strength and flexibility. The result so far has been no nagging back/butt/piriformis problems and better tolerance of higher mileage/higher intensity.
