I agree with Joe Z. Wise advise. Weight lifting helps retain muscle mass that age and long distance running deplete.

I also concur with the injury prevention.

Also, weight lifting done right could be the best stretching exercise there is. A lot of my running soreness goes away after I lift. I saw an interview with Emmitt Smith in which he stated that the monday after a football game he is in the gym lifting weights to get rid of pain. It sounds like an oxymoron - but believe me it works.

By the way - I lift at 80% of maximum weight and long reps (14-20) per set. Don't try lifting heavy its counterproductive to running efficiency
