My doc - reknowned knee specialist - told me 8 years ago that if I continued running I wouldn't be able to walk by the time I'm 50. So I quit the long training runs and started to cross train and do triathlons instead. Got really heavy into swimming, even won a medal or two in the 200 breastroke in Masters championships...
Did well in triathlons too. But I missed running...
All this cross training paid off. Two years ago I decided to do a few 'real' running races, did okay in the 10 and 20 ks, even scheduled a not entirely unsatisfactory marathon. But last summer was the real thing. I turned 50 and decided to prove the good MD wrong: I registered PBs in the 5, 10, 20 kms, half marathon and marathon. And no pain. The most credible explanation I heard was that I had given my running legs a number of years of 'rest', improved my upper body strenght through swimming and just got faster by training for and competing in triathlons (which is a wild sport).
I think cross training is the answer to many of our ills...
