Cross training is the best thing you can do. Lift weights, ride bikes, swim, row, etc.

I've discovered that cross training does several things. - It gives sore muscles time to recoup - Mental freshness - Burn more calories by testing untested muscles - complimentary muscle build (ie, lifting weights gives you upper body strength that is needed for faster times)

I've cross train by necessity (due to injuries) and I'm better off for it.
