Accurace of calorie counters on exercise equipment

Hi Gang:

I just bought a German made exercise bike. Its great except for one problem. The bike displays Kilojoules instead of calories. I can convert the KJ to Cal easily. When I do, the calories burned are far less than the ones I get using US models like the Life Cycle fitness. Essentially, I'm biking almost 70% more in order to achieve the same results. Not exactly motivating.

The question is how accurate are calorie counters on exercise equipment? My only other experience is with calorie counters is on the Concept2 rowing machine, Schwinn ergo, and the Life Cycle Fitness bike.
