I'm no expert, but I do run and lift regularly, and I definitely think lifting is of great benefit to just about anybody, no matter what their preferred sport or fitness level. I started by using the machines at the gym and eventually "graduated" to free weights, which is all I ever use now. If you want to get into weights quickly and safely, I recommend you go to a gym and ask for an orientation, or get a personal trainer to set up a program based on you goals. You can also get a book and learn yourself. Or better yet, go to the following website:

http://www.stumptuous.com

It's an absolute goldmine of information about weightlifting for women.
