About using the bike:
1) it strengthens the lower quads, which can help prevent knee pain
2) I find that if I am doing a "race/long run" over a weekend, going on a short ride (low gear, high rpm) the afternoon after the race helps get rid of some of the next day sorness.
As far as swimming: I love it! I typically get 4-5 swims a week, going between 2000 and 4000 yds per swim.
