1st time marathon - have to do a 26 mile training run?

I started running one year ago. I ran the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in April and finished (hooray for my 1st race!) I had some injury issues to get past and now am revving up for the Marine Corps in the fall. My goal? To finish.

I reviewed my friend's AIDS Marathon Training Schedule and they recommend running a 26 miler as the final long run before the race. The Non-Runners Marathon Trainer book says that 18-20 miles should be sufficient to finishing the marathon.

Which advice should I follow? Personally, something in between would probably be best. I don't have enough weeks to finish the AIDS Marathon Training Schedule in its entirety and 18-20 doesn't quite seem like enough especially if I want to avoid injuries.

Your thoughts would be appreciated!
