Racing seems to bring something out of you that's not possible in a training run. For example, I have trouble hitting a 6 minute mile pace in my training, but put me in a race and I can do it. Crossing the finish line gives a feeling of accomplishment. We stood up to the challenge and did something alot of others can't or won't. Crossing the finish line is a goal, and it's always very satisfying to reach a goal. There's so many more reasons...
