Being 50 (in 12 days), I, too, worry about the age thang, so I run 5 days and lift weights 2 and plan to stay that course. And, like you, I'm gearing up for my first marathon. I was going to run Kiawah in December, but Ocean State is in 4 months and seems doable.
Twelve miles has become comfortable, but yesterday I experienced a bit of plantar discomfort. Having crashed a month before the race the last time I tried this, I'm a bit skittish, but I think I've just been spending too much time on my feet. And, like you, "things" come and go. As long as they don't become chronic, I just take 'em in stride, pardon the pun.
