Joe, a very good question and a valid concern of mine as well. I'm in the middle of my training for my first marathon, I increase my weekly long run by 1 mile every week. I have found that 15 is significantly different than 12 or 13. Blisters re-appear where calouses had developed before. Pressure points and knee pains come and go during the run, and recently the muscle behind the knee at the top of the calf seems to want to seize up randomly in mid-stride. I attribute a lot of this to age (51) and have to put 2 days of rest in my training schedule just to keep from breaking down entirely. But it all does seem to subside just in time for the next run. So I guess my view of this is, there will continue to be surprises but as a previous runner noted in a response to me, every day brings it's toll.
