While primarily a 10k runner, I've run a couple of half marathons (I'm training for my first marathon now) and I focus on tempo and form, especially at the longer distances.
Course knowledge certainly helps. It's disheartening to power up a hill only to turn a corner and find more hill!
And I would strongly advise against letting it all hang out on the downhill. This is where knee injuries happen, so you want to pay special attention to form.
