I am not familiar with this book, but I wouldn't recommend training towards a specific time goal for your first time. You can approximate your time by running a somewhat relaxed 5k and dividing that time by 3. This will give you a reasonable expectation of what your pace should be per mile.
I guess the overall point is that the training guide may be good, but don't worry if you need to train and do the marathon at a slower pace the first time. After all this preparation, it is better to cross the finish line than meet a specific time goal (for your first time).
