'tween race training

Do y'all start over from square 1 with a 4 month training program for each race or do you maintain a certain mileage between races? Say I run a marathon today, how much recovery will I need in terms of time and miles and how much do I want to run once I've recovered? Do I want 40 or 50 mpw with only a month or 6 week race prep? Do I want to run at the pre-race level year round?

My goal is to run two a year, but I don't want to start at square 1 each time.

Thanks!
