Zeke-you can't be serious! The name 'Flying Pig'was chosen because Cincinnati was once called 'Porkopolis' because of all the meat processing that took place here in the 19th century. We are still home to Kahn's. There is also a statue in a downtown park where the marathon ends, of winged or 'Flying Pigs'. When the marathon started in 1999,the organizers wanted to convey the sense of a fun, middle of the pack friendly marathon. If they had called it the Cincinnati Marathon , I don't believe it would have been 1 of the fastest growing marathons ever and voted 1 of the 20 best by Runner's World.Runners and spectators have fun with the name. There are ladies at he finish line dressed in pig costumes, the volunteers are called 'grunts' and there is a nice finisher's medal with the front and yes the back side of a pig on the back. I will be running May 1 and I am proud to call myself a 'pig'
