Road races and tris have male/female categories, open/masters categories, wheelchair categories, and sometimes even visually impaired categories. So it makes perfect sense to institute weight categories as well.
The trouble as I see it-- there's no uniform application of standards. Some races use the term "Athena", some "Filly". Some start at 140 lbs. for women, others at 170 lbs. Some start at 170 lbs. for men, others at 200 lbs. That's a problem.
The USA Clydesdale & Filly Racing Federation needs to do a better job working with race directors.
