I'm not a medical expert, but what you describe isn't common. Sometimes, periods become irregular from heavy training. Also, a lot depends on your age -- are you older, in perimenapause? Are you sure it was a period? Could the previous bout have been spotting? If you find your cycles becoming more erratic, see a OB/GYN. It may be something serious.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't let it get too far in case it's something unrelated to running.
