Apologies for jumping in on your thread, but I was where you are a couple of months back and had the same basic question. January 1 I was overweight, out of shape, hadn't run in years. Like you I set the goal to run a marathon. Kiawah is 12/15, so that gave me 11 months. The plan was to get to 30 mpw in 5 months, stay there for 2 months, then build for 4 months.
I started on a treadmill, stayed with that for a couple of weeks, then swapped one "walk" a week for a run.
Once I was running 4 days, I kicked up the mileage on my "long" run every couple of weeks and bumped the others up to match during the folowing weeks.
Once I got to 6 miles, I settled in to doing one long run (currently 12 miles) and one longish run (9 miles) with two shorter runs in between.
Because I'm 50 and was way out of shape, I bike on 'tween days. I find a moderate bike after my long day helps me recover better.
Anywho, that's my story and I'm stickin' with it!
