I agree with Ollie: getting into a marathon program cold (without a year's worth of serious training prior) is not the best strategy. When I did my first marathon I had a few years' of triathlon (training and competing) "under my belt". And even if I never stopped training for the triathlon I dedicated 7 full months of specific training to prepare for Boston. I wouldn't dream of getting into a marathon training program without the kind of experience Ollie is talking about. And I repeat what I said earlier: getting a few races in(short ones, long ones, doesn't really matter) would be helpful...
