I wasn't trying to be hard on Graham. A base of 12 miles per week seems inadequate to start most of the marathon training programs. So goal one was to get him to run more per week, even though his ability to run 6 miles is excellent for someone first considering a marathon. My next goal was to get him to pick a marathon training program that suited him. Lastly, I wanted him to become prepared for a marathon too early, and then sustain that level of fitness for a few months prior to running a great first marathon.
Personally, I'm out of the marathon game until September 16 (Yonkers). After some resting during the winter, I've been doing 200 miles/month since March 1. Mostly I just run, with no real daily objective other than to accumulate miles. I'm pushing myself on speed rather than on endurance, hoping to set some PR's in the fall. I'm still 40 minutes away from qualifying for Boston, a goal that you (North) have already accomplished!
Let's see what type of suggestions others give for preparing Graham. :-)
