Here is what I know: I know of people who have done back to back marathons; for example check out www.HiGuy.org
We have a local gal who did 3 marathons in a 4 week period. 2 were sub 3:20, and one was just over. She'll win an 8 mile race on Saturday, then a 50K on Sunday. BUT, she is experienced, she is slender, and she has a quick little running gait and barely strikes the pavement; she could run across wet rice-paper and not break it.
On the other hand, I am a heavy (185 lbs) plodder who pounds the pavement when I run; I could crack concrete with my foot strike. Even a "slow" marathon 3 weeks prior to my goal one was too much for me; see the thread that North mentioned.
In short, MOST of us wouldn't be able to get away with it but there are those few exceptions.
