You are going to do a good thing, raising money for health research. But it is obviously your first marathon, new friend, because when you get there, you will see how MANY people are trying to do the same thing. The marathonguide site is visited primarily by people who have been running marathons (that's how people hear about the site), and we've not only seen the hundreds doing the same thing, it feels "common". You'll have more success going outside the world of marathoners to raise the money. Enjoy the ride. You will have tremendous excitement and feelings of accomplishment if you complete both the money-raising task and the marathon itself. And if the money just doesn't come in (but it probably will), you keep running anyway. Don't be discouraged. People are charitable, that's how charities can exist...there's just no guarantees, that's all. But you can control whether or not you improve your own fitness, and you'll meet wonderful people along the way.
