Hmm, I guess it depends on the area you live in. In my case, I would feel comfortable with a sign at the post office in this area but I would also do the following:
* Find a couple of ringers to run for the first few meetings, just to make sure there are people you know around. * Run during the daylight in a public park/road/beach/etc. * Keep a cell phone with me (I take it on long runs anyway!)
Are there running groups in your area? I'm considering posting at my local fitness center, at a couple of local races, and maybe online. Would any of those work for you?
