Susan: Yeah, that's what I meant. I wonder if there is any research about that...comparative results...I also train without gels or sportsdrink because they are, however technically, illegal in races here.

Mike26.2 makes the point that recover takes longer if not properly fueled. Point taken. However, I wonder if (pure speculation) starting with the tank emptier means that you can get the "stresses" of, say, a 22 mile run at the 18 mile point.

If one point of the long run is to train your body to burn fat as efficiently as possible, wouldn't it make sense to deprive it of other fuel so that it has no choice but to burn fat? I don't know...just thinking out loud.
