Greg McMillan recommends doing two types of long runs. What he calls the long, steady distance run is supposed to teach your body to burn fat more efficiently and train your body and mind to run when fatigued. The other one, the fast finish long run, teaches you to run strong at the end and practice what you will do on race day.
I think what he says makes sense and I considered doing it in training for this race season, but then I got involved with doing something else that will not allow me to do it. I may try it next season.
